Read the story Mom: Warning didn't keep slain son safe at Florida nightclub

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Stephanie White clutched a stack of photos while sitting in a chair in her home. The television was on, loud, and turned to the local news. A story came on about the mass shooting at a nightclub that took her baby's life.
"My son," said White, tired and dejected Monday afternoon. She waved a hand at the television. "There's another picture of him."
Her son was one of two teenagers killed early Monday at Club Blu, the latest in a string of mass shootings across the nation this summer. With the Orlando massacre at the Pulse nightclub still fresh on her mind, White had advised her 18-year-old on what to do if there was a shooting: "Hit the floor; find a table."
But when gunfire erupted in the parking lot of the Fort Myers club, 18-year-old Stef'an Strawder didn't have anywhere to hide. He was killed along with a 14-year-old boy. Seventeen people ranging in age from 12 to 27 were wounded during the swimsuit-themed party for teens."I told him to look for all the exits if any kind of shooting would go off, to hit the floor, find a table and get out of the way ... because I thought about the people in Orlando. That was a big thing," White told The Associated Press.
Because the shooting happened in the parking lot, "he didn't have that chance," she said.
Florida is again reeling from a mass shooting at a nightclub, but instead of being committed by an extremist spouting Islamist ideology, this rampage may have started with an argument about a rap performance. Police have not yet released a motive.
Monday's shooting was followed by a visit from the governor, makeshift memorials of flowers and prayer vigils.
"It's difficult to understand and difficult to wrap your brain around," said Teresa Furlough, an elementary school teacher and the mother of three children, ages 18, 16 and 15, none of whom were at the club. Furlough attended one of three vigils Monday evening.
"We're pro-life when it comes to certain situations, but we're not pro-life for every situation," she said. "These people didn't respect the sanctity of life."
The shooting at a venue tucked in a strip mall also left 14-year-old Sean Archilles dead, and a state grappling with another tragedy. The massacre at Orlando's Pulse nightclub last month killed 49 patrons and wounded dozens.
Fort Myers interim Police Chief Dennis Eads said the shooting was not an act of terrorism. Police detained three people and were searching for others, he added.
In a news release, officials said they investigated two suspicious vehicles near the club in the aftermath of the shooting; one vehicle fled and led officers on a chase, eventually stopping. Two men ran from the car, the release said, and the driver accelerated toward officers, one of whom shot the man in the abdomen. That man, who was treated and released from a hospital, was charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and fleeing. Police haven't said whether the men were involved in the shooting.
The chief declined to give a motive for the shooting or discuss details, saying the investigation is ongoing.
The shooting happened about 12:30 a.m. Monday, just as the club was closing and parents were picking up their children.
Security guard Brandy Mclaughlin, who was hired for the event, said she saw someone with a semi-automatic rifle open fire, with the attack sounding like "firecrackers."
"The rapper was upset, someone not being able to perform," she said. "It wasn't targeted, terrorist or gays, or anything like that. It wasn't a black or white situation. It was an idiot. An idiot with a firearm."
Club owner Cheryl Filardi, who said she was in the back room when the shots rang out, said at least 10 security guards were hired for the party — two in the parking lot, one or two at the door and the rest floating inside.
She said the club has had four or five teen parties over the past half-dozen years, and this was the second one this summer. She said the parties are something positive for a rough and often-violent neighborhood.
"To be honest with you, every day someone's getting shot in this area. These days in Lee County, somebody's always shooting," Filardi said. "If we do teen parties, we always have a ton of security and we've never had a problem."
State records show this wasn't the first time violence had broken out at Club Blu.
Department of Business and Professional Regulation records show two separate shootings occurred just outside the club on the same night in May 2015. Two men were each shot in the leg but told police they did not want to press charges.
Although beer posters still hung in its windows, Club Blu's alcohol license was revoked June 7 because of issues related to its business records, regulators said.

BUCHI EMECHETA: ONE OF THE AFRICA`S GREATEST WRITERS OF THE CONTEMPORARY TIMES

"Being a woman writer, I would be deceiving myself if I said I write completely through the eye of a man. There's nothing bad in it, but that does not make me a feminist writer. I hate that name. The tag is from the Western world - like we are called the Third World." ~Buchi Emecheta

Africa’s most acclaimed female novelist, children's writer, screenplay writer, and autobiographer. She is the author of Second-Class Citizen (1974), The Bride Price (1976), The Slave Girl (1977) The Joys of Motherhood (1979), Destination Biafra (1982), and Double Yoke (1982)

Florence Onye Buchi Emecheta OBE (born July 21, 1944, Lagos, Nigeria), is one of Africa’s most
acclaimed female novelist, children's writer, screenplay writer, and autobiographer. The Britain-based writer, Buchi who is from the highly workaholic, resourceful, intelligent, creative cum intellectual ethnic Anioma people -a sub-group of the larger ndi-Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria, is among the most important female authors to emerge from post-colonial Africa.
Emecheta was married at age 16 and immigrated with her husband to London in 1962. The problems she encountered in London during the early 1960s provided background for the books that are called her immigrant novels. It has been said that "of all the women writers in contemporary African literature Buchi Emecheta of Nigeria has been the most sustained and vigorous voice of direct feminist protest (Lloyd Wellesley Brown, Women Writers in Black Africa (Westport, CT: Greenwood Press, 1981). While the genesis of African and Nigerian women’s literature began with Flora Nwapa, second generation Nigerian woman writer Buchi Emecheta’s works have created a milestone in African literature. Buchi Emecheta’s life is as exemplarily as her resilient, strong womanist characters.

Nigerian Women In Italy Caught Prostituting In The Forest Under Very Bad Conditions

makeshift atmosphere of the sex camps represents a clear sense that the economic and social crises are degrading the condition of everyday life for a vast range of people in many parts of the world and that the global elites’ answers to these crises cannot provide any solutions, regulations or reprieve in the near future. When Nigerians began migrating to Italy in the mid-1980s, they were one of the first communities from developing countries that were attracted by Italy’s demand for low-skilled labour. Constrained by stringent border controls, many were pushed to take illegal routes to the country and adopt professions that are less than safe.
The underground economy attracted immigrant workers providing them jobs without regulations. In a market strongly segmented by gender, age, educational qualifications and population shortages with immigrants, problems are worsened by a political system and public opinion where xenophobia is widespread. As men remained at work in the fields of the southern regions of Italy where organised crime thrives, and the line between legitimate and illegal enterprises is often blurred, the first Nigerian women began to independently work as prostitutes.
For over 20 years, the women of Benin City, a town in the state of Edo in the
south-central part of Nigeria, have traveled to Italy to work in the sex trade. Every year, successful ones recruit younger girls to follow in their steps. Most migrant women, including those who end up in the sex industry, have made a clear decision to leave home and take their chances overseas. They are headstrong and ambitious women who migrate in order to escape conflict, persecution, environmental degradation, natural disasters, and other situations that affect their habitat and livelihood. The success of many Italos, as these women are called, is evident in Edo, partly in the form of grand houses built with remittances, therefore for many girls prostitution in Italy has become an entirely acceptable trade. They have chosen a variety of ways to exploit their personal assets. These range from being erotic dancers, to real contact work of varying levels of intimacy.

Why I starved, chained my son – CCC Pastor

Lagos –  A Celestial Church of Christ Pastor, Francis Taiwo who allegedly starved and chained his nine-year-old son for months in Ogun state has been arrested by the Police for prosecution.
The 40-year-old pastor was apprehended by the police on Sunday at his church CCC, Key of Joy Parish, Ajibawo village, Atan, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
According to Police sources, the alleged Pastor may be charged with attempted murder, among other offences, after the completion of investigation, saying “The pastor may be charged with attempted murder. His action was capable of killing the boy”.
Korede was rescued on Friday during a joint operation by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the police, after receiving a tip-off from residents of the area, while the boy’s stepmother, Kehinde, had also been arrested for allegedly aiding the cruelty meted out to the him.
Korede, who said he aspired to be a doctor, had blamed his father for his stealing habit, saying “It is true that I stole a pot of soup and a bowl of eba in our house. I also stole in the neighbourhood. My father’s inability to give money to my stepmother for the upkeep of the family caused it. When I was chained, my father and stepmother fed me twice a day. Some days, I was not given any food. I want to go back to school because I want to be a doctor in the future. I do not want to go back to my father’s house”.
It was also leant that Francis, a father of five who hails from Benin Republic, confessed to the act in his statement to the police, adding that Korede’s mother was late.
He said, “I was ordained a pastor in the CCC in 2012. I had divorced two wives, including Korede’s mother, Maria; she is late now. She had four children for me, two boys and two girls before she divorced me in 2007 after she gave birth to Korede. I chained Korede because he is possessed. An evil spirit makes him to steal. He needs deliverance. His siblings are not living with me.”
One of the residents who informed the Police about the atrocity hinted that Francis had been warned on several occasions against unleashing violence on the victim.
According to him, “His father has been chaining him for the past six months. He would chain him for hours and release him. His grouse is that Korede steals and runs away from home and he thinks a spirit is controlling the child. He once took him to a river in chains for deliverance.”
The Ogun State police spokesperson, SP Muyiwa Adejobi who confirmed the story added “The case has been transferred to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Labour Unit of the command for necessary investigation and actions as directed by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of zone 2, AIG Abdulmajid Ali,” he said.

young men was charged to court this morning for tearing APC Governorship Candidate, Godwin Obaseki's campaign poster after the supporters of Godwin Obaseki

A young man was charged to court this morning for tearing APC Governorship Candidate, Godwin Obaseki's campaign poster after the supporters of Godwin Obaseki removed that of PDP Governorship Candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu. We will never vote for any man that will jail a fellow human being for tearing his campaign poster. We are presently in Magistrate Court 8 in Benin city.

Indeed very very serious. They have been mounting pressure on the young man to support Godwin Obaseki, the young man refused on the ground that APC government has brought untold hardship on the people of Edo State.

Godwin Obaseki cannot start to jail those he intend to govern because of campaign material.

We call on APC Governorship Candidate, Godwin Obaseki to withdraw the case filed against the young Edo son.

May God help the people of Edo from the hands of the oppressors.

GOOD TO Remember: 2014 GOVERNOR OSHIOMHOLE [ APC] EDO STATE POLITICS OF DECEIT ,SECTIONALISM AND BAD GOVERNANCE.

edo PDP

Edo state is part  of the oil region of Nigeria and   has been in the news recently for the wrong reasons. The politrics of “one man, one vote” mantra of Governor Oshiomhole has now become one man ,one show .Also, in the anal political history of Edo state, a new phraseology has been given to the state “ go and die” due to the insensitivity of the state governor to the plight of the down trodden people in the state as regards the recent out burst of the governor against the working class  widow.  A governor widower vs a working class widow of Edo state. Hence these unsavoury incidents necessitated this discourse.
Edolites and indeed majority of Nigerians both at home and in diaspora including this writer,  have always perceived Governor Oshiomhole as a true democrat, effective ex-Labour Leader and politician of a different specie who not only represent Edo working class but Nigerians working class as a whole. Hence, Edolites and Nigerians expects Governor Oshiomhole to have been circumspect in his political and moral dealings with the people of Edo state and Nigeria at large.
The recent events in the state as regard the above ugly development of a widower governor telling another working class widow to “ go and die” because the widow in question violated the street law trading  and in-spite of the woman’s plea for leniency and gave the reasons among many,  that she is a widow who has recently lost her policeman husband in the line of duty  and need to fend for her children and household, the governor was not ready to listen and show compassion on the woman  but rather  asked the woman to go and die . Edolites and indeed Nigerians are beginning to ask questions if our leaders really care, considering Nigerian politicians utterances, arrogance and flagrant abuses of power by our leaders.
The recent hijacked of the  200  innocent school girls in the Northern part of Nigeria though sad and portray bad image for Nigeria, could to an extent,  be attributed to the insensitive undemocratic utterances of some of our leaders who at all cost wants to blackmail president Goodluck Jonathan and portray him as a weak and bad  leader. Nigerians both at home and in diaspora know who their true leaders are and  pray for the safe release of these innocent girls .Nigerian people  look forward to an all inclusive holistic approach to curtailing the menace of insurgency in the country.
While  nations and celebrities around the world are concern about this unwelcome development and have been working with Nigeria government to seek the release of these girls, Nigerians are still waiting to see  opposition party like APC and its leaders making meaningful  suggestions and working with President Goodluck Jonathan to curb the menace of Boko Haram insurgents in the North, no wonder the “ go and die” mentality still suffice within the rank and file of APC opposition party.
President Goodluck Jonathan is well aware of the precariousness of human lives in the country  and is working with well meaning Nigerians and foreign partners to ensure the safety of these innocent school girls. Nigerians expect the governor of the state where this incident happens to do more in protecting lives and property  hence, Federal government should stop the security vote money  running to billions  given to this state and  any  state with security lapses  until such state/s hold grip of related security issues  within their states.  It could be argued that while some states in Nigeria like Akwa-Ibom, Delta, Cross-River, Ondo, Anambra, Eboyin, Lagos to mention a few have  embark on measures to protect their states and witnessing some developmental strides , Edo state today still lack basic infrastructure in most rural areas. The Governor  only resort to cheap propaganda and where development occurs, it only happens in the capital.
Governor Oshiomhole is unconscious of the fact that there is different between being a Labour leader which requires diplomacy, a little bit of  aggressiveness , understanding and compromise   in fighting for the rights and good welfare of the people to  being a governor of a state that requires team work, sincerity of purpose,  transparency, accountability, visionary leadership and decorum to mention a few. The just concluded APC ward congress perceived by top APC Edo members to be flawed has been tearing the party apart in the state. Apolitical Edolites are beginning to question the true meaning of “ one man ,one vote “of the governor and the sincerity of this phrase, now one man ,one show in the APC Edo state.
Edolites and indeed discerning Nigerians, are beginning to wonder if APC as an opposition political party that pride itself as effective progressive party is truly and indeed  progressive ,if the party can-not conduct free, fair and transparent elections in the state and their relevant states. Yes, the ruling party ,The peoples democratic party [ PDP] is the largest party in Nigeria and Africa which has its challenges just like any other ruling parties in both developing and developed worlds, the party has been magnanimous enough to accept these challenges and addressing them head on under the visionary leadership skills of the president, able chairman of the party , National Executive council members ,The national working committee members and all stakeholders of the party to reform and reposition the party for more electoral success both at the states and  Federal levels with the  ultimate goal of developing the country.
Edolites are now asking pertinent  questions and taking actions as life under the present governor Oshiomhole APC in Edo state is becoming tyrannical and oppressive. Today, discerning Edolites are questioning the unity of our beloved state under the APC . Do Edolites get value for money for all the infrastructural  projects the government under APC have embarked upon.? Why has the government of Oshiomhole not been honest to tell Edolites how much has been borrowed on behalf of the state government , from what source/s these monies have been borrowed , The terms of payment , duration of these loans and the true current financial situation of the state.
Edolites are uncomfortable with the present economic situations of the state as many progressive edolites are of the view that the state economy is in comatose. Industries like Edo brewery remained grounded. Average Edolites are being harassed and intimidated by those governing them. The governor known with his acidic tongue and accusations of godfatherism against true son of  Edo state, ChIef Anthony Anenih, an icon, mentor and true nationalist leader and accusations against other notable sons and daughters of our beloved   state is today being accussed of becoming an emperor who do not listen and acts arbitrarily no matter who is gored. Today , Edo state under APC government is witnessing dictatorial ,politics of maginalisation and politics of sectionalism.
Edo state is in dire need of a political –economic reform as the state economy has to be rejuvenated .Edo APC led by governor Oshiomhole has deceived Edo people with his  politrics ,playing a dirty ,tribal and uncouth politics. Our leaders ,elders,  respectful sons and daughters have not  been appreciated  but   reduced to nothing in the state. It is unfortunate that Edo state one of the oil producing states in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria ,once a model and known for its prosperity ,hard work and a pride to the nation is today fading away fast and becoming a land of unmitigated disaster,”go and die” phraseology mentality and despair. A state historically laboured for and created by a direct vote by exemplary good distinguished Edolites on August 9, 1963 and perceived to be a land of milk and honey long time ago has today become delusional. This writer remembered the glorious days of Bendel insurance football club known for its football laurels and trophies.
Edo state known as offshoot of the defunct Midwestern Region and an envy of other states in Nigeria as it truly represented the heart beat of the nation today means the opposite. Progressive Edolites ,including this writer ,appreciate the vision and thank our founding fathers and mothers both dead and alive ,spearheaded by our most revered OBA of Benin ,His Royal Majesty ,Oba  Akenzua ,who according to historians, writers and researchers played a pivotal role in the creation of Midwestern Region. Edolites also thank our present Oba ,His royal majesty for his fatherly role and astute leadership in the state. The vision and foresight of our illustrious sons and daughters like chief Humphrey Omo- osagie ,Late chief Anthony Enahoro[ a great patriot ] who moved the motion for Nigeria’s independence from Britain , chief Okotieboh ,chief Omimi ejoh, chief Anthony Anenih ,chief Osaigbovo Ogbemudia, one time successful governor of the state, chief Nosakhere Isekhure, chief Mike Akhigbe, chief Tom Ikimi, professor Omo Omoruyi, Elder Odion Ugbesia [ Leader and senator of federal Republic of Nigeria], Chief Dan Orbih[ chairman PDP,Edo state] and a whole lot of other personalities and patriots that time and space will not permit me to mention in this discourse. Edolites  both at home and in diaspora appreciates  and thank you all for your courage ,love for the state and country.
The struggle for a united ,prosperous ,progressive and developed Edo state and Nigeria continues.  Edo state in the 21st century needs leaders that are compassionate, de-tribalised, treat all the three senatorial districts of the state fairly, equitably and respectfully.  A governor  that listen and acts to the yearnings and expectations of the people. A leader with midas  touch and work for the generality and progress of the state and country. A fair  and visionary leader to  save our people from the present political-economic doldrum . A leader that will concentrate and focus on governance  , being pro-active and not waste unnecessary time and money in abusing our leaders and elders in the state. A leader that will work diplomatically and harmoniously  with the centre to develop the state and country. God bless the good people of Edo state and Nigeria.

22 July 2016 – In a cross-border humanitarian operation, a total of 31 metric tonnes of food and some non-food items have been distributed to about 15,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Banki, located in Nigeria's restive Borno state, near the border with Cameroon, the United Nations relief wing announced today.
The cross-border operation, undertaken with close coordination between the humanitarian country teams in Nigeria and Cameroon, was necessary as there was no access from Maiduguri, the humanitarian hub in Nigeria, Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHAtold journalists at the regular bi-weekly press briefing in Geneva.
“The roads from Maiduguri to Banki were unsafe,” noted Mr. Laerke. “[Ensuring] regular and frequent support to those IDPs […] would only be possible with increased security in the area,” he added.
The food delivered yesterday is expected to last less than a week.
Given the lack of civilian authorities in the area and problems with access, it is difficult to ascertain the actual number of people affected. According to best estimates, the IDPs number between 15,000 and 20,000, he said.
Mr. Laerke said that the Nigerian army, in control of Banki as there are no civil authorities left, had earlier shared some of its own rations with the IDPs, but these were far from sufficient.
The aid convoy complemented another intervention in the field nutrition and health by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

More power and improved drivability for an extremely rare supercar

When it comes to high quality modifications for supercars, edo competition Motorsport GmbH is one of the most established names in the business. Regardless of make and model, the edo team is always looking for ways to refine and optimize. That’s also why the owner of a Koenigsegg came to us. Not entirely happy with the power of his Swedish exotic and looking to improve the drivability as well as the appearance, he tasked edo competition with the job of making it happen.

Since the V8 engine is being force-fed by twin superchargers, the main focus was on the setup of the two Rotrex units. With assistance from the manufacturer the drive ratio was modified and the ECU was remapped to accommodate the hardware changes. The aim was to increase the power output while maintaining a broad torque curve over the whole rev range. With the new drive ratio the engine hits its torque peak earlier and puts out up to 891 horsepower, depending on the level of tune. In order to ensure long term reliability of the superchargers, the engine redline was lowered to 7,200 rpm.

The transmission with its notchy gear changes received an overhaul as well. The six speed gearbox was disassembled in its entirety and the plastic bushings were replaced with Uniball units. The final result: full boost pressure from just 3,700 rpm all the way up to 6,000 rpm, reassuringly durable brakes, finely tuned directional stability beyond 300 km/h (186 mph) and a top speed that was reduced slightly from 390 km/h (242 mph) for phenomenal and significantly improved acceleration and drivability.

Additional changes were made to the design of the vehicle’s interior and exterior. The wheels for example underwent a beauty treatment and received a coat of charcoal paint. The updated front with auxiliary lights now resembles the later CCR models, and the Alcantara material that was used throughout the Koenigsegg’s cabin provides a more luxurious feel. The redesigned center console now accommodates a new infotainment system including a reversing camera as well as a custom-made pouch for the immobilizer remote. For safety reasons a TPM system now informs the driver about tire pressures and temperatures. The display was integrated into the dashboard.

The bottom line: edo competition has succeeded in upgrading this extremely rare exotic with fine details without watering down its distinctly unique character. However, the most impressive aspect is still the intense and violent acceleration, which is virtually unparalleled, even in the realm of supercars.

All modifications are carried out exclusively at edo competition Motorsport GmbH in Ahlen.

And: The demo vehicle is for sale! For 89,000 euros the “Golden Snake” will change its owner.

The Leaves of Soursop Are 1,000 Times Stronger At Killing Cancer Cells Than Chemotherapy!

Effective Against Cancer

Soursop is widely promoted as an alternative cancer treatment. However, there is no medical evidence yet. Proponents claim that the effects of soursop leaves in fighting cancer cells are thousands of times better than chemotherapy. What’s even better, they’re much cheaper than the popular treatment for cancer, and it does not come with any side effects and complications. It is said that soursop leaves are highly effective against lung, breast, and prostate cancer.
In order to make a tea out of soursop leaves, chop up 10 soursop leaves and boil them in 3 cups of water. Turn off the stove when about 2/3 of the water evaporates and only 1/3 remains. Allow the tea to cool down and consume it.
.

Urinary Tract Infection Treatment

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a condition that is characterized by the bacterial infection of the urethra, urinary bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Consuming tea made of soursop is believed to have powerful effects against urinary tract infections. If you are prone to this condition, you may take the said tea on a regular basis as a preventive measure.

Soursop Tea Great for Gout Treatment

Gout is a condition characterized by inflamed and painful joints, in particular, the joints in the feet and hands. Consumption of tea made from boiling soursop leaves can help relieve this condition. This natural remedy for gout works like a miracle because it helps in flushing out uric acid from the blood, the main reason behind this painful condition.

Perfect for Eczema

Soursop leaves can also be used to treat eczema. The best thing about using these leaves is that they don’t come with any unfavorable side effects like most topical steroids do, especially when they are used for extended periods of time. To fight eczema, simply follow the procedure above on making a poultice out of soursop leaves. Apply the poultice liberally on areas of the body affected by eczema to benefit from its anti-inflammatory properties.

Boost the Immune System

Do you often find yourself having a cold, cough, flu, and a variety of other diseases and infections? Maybe the reason is a weak immune system. An excellent way to protect your body more effectively against invading microbes is by regularly consuming tea derived from soursop leaves. This beverage may also be taken if you are already suffering from an illness in order to help your body bounce back from it at a much faster rate.

Several specialized UN Agencies will provide expertise on food production (FAO), labour and employment (ILO) and international trade (ITC). An early warning Geographical Information System (GIS) will also be available to connect farmers with agricultural extension services and provide real time market data.img_20160714_214840-resized-800
Sahara Group, a leading African energy conglomerate and member of the SDG Fund Private Sector Advisory Group and major co-financer of the project, will bring its business perspective to the programme to ensure the viability of the facility’s operations.
“We are excited to showcase this new project which will go a long way to shine the spotlight on the links between agricultural training, food security and improving nutritional livelihoods in our communities” said Tonye Cole, Executive Director and co-founder of the Sahara Group.
The Kaduna State Government will provide the land for the constructed facility as well as farmland and personnel. The state government will collaborate with other state-level stakeholders to improve local infrastructure including rural roads to allow greater access to the facility and farmland.
“The commitment of the state government to this project is unwavering. We are expecting nothing but the best from this collaborative effort which resonates with the aspirations of the government with regards to empowering our people and ultimately achieving the SDGs in Kaduna State,” said the Deputy Governor Bantex.
It is expected that 5,000 women and men of Kaduna will be directly impacted with new job prospects, increased income and additional skills to compete in the thriving food industry.
In addition, an estimated 500,000 residents will indirectly benefit from the Food Africa Project which is designed to be scaled-up in the region and eventually replicated in other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Food for SDGs
Nigeria has been an avid proponent and early adopter of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were approved at the United Nations in September.
Under the leadership of Victoria Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, plans and policies are now underway to achieve these goals by 2030.
In Africa, agriculture remains a vital source of employment and income generation. In Nigeria the sector contributes to an estimated 70% of employment in Nigeria, but only 22% of GDP, thus indicating a significant potential for productivity gains.
Despite a strong reliance on farming and agriculture, malnutrition is often prevalent in many regions and invariably an estimated 50-70% of harvests can be lost due to the lack of appropriate storage facilities and limited market information.
On top of that, climate change, could result in falls in output of up to 30%, according to the World Bank estimates. The recent state of emergency declared in Kaduna over tomato shortages and soaring prices caused by the moth tuta absoluta exemplifies climate and environmental pressures to agricultural production to come.
Revolutionizing the food industry
In order to tackle these pressing challenges, the SDG Fund, a mechanism established by the UN to advance the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is engaging governments, UN Agencies, civil society and the private sector on issues critical to enhancing food security and nutrition.
The pilot Food Africa project in Kaduna will provide a backward and forward integration approach for food supply chain management.
The programme will introduce more sustainable practices in the value chain, reduce crop waste and improve smallholder farmers’ profitability.
Recognizing the link between the gaps in skills and structural unemployment in the region, the project will promote income generating opportunities and technical support to promote trade of local goods and services.
The programme will feature an agro processing facility and serve as a Centre of Excellence to increase farmers’ receipts and reduce food loss.
The centre will provide training in the food industry on issues linked to food safety, business planning and product diversification.
Designed as a hybrid public-private facility, the programme will eventually be sustained and managed by local farmers.

Nigeria starting all over again – Buhari

Despite its over 100 years’ existence as a nation, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said the situation in the country is like Nigeria was starting all over again.
He said there was a time in the history of the country that there was so much money that successive governments took things for granted.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving Ambassador Nasser Bourita, a Special Envoy of King Mohammed VI of Morocco, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said his administration was only “managing” because of the sharp drop in price of oil.
Buhari said that was why the Federal Government was in a hurry to see projects take off in the agricultural sector to enhance food security and create jobs for teeming unemployed youths.

For us in Nigeria, it is like starting all over again. There was a time we had so much money and took things for granted. But with the fall in the international price of oil, we are now managing,” the President said.
Buhari welcomed the plan by Morocco to establish a fertilizer plant in Nigeria, which would not only serve the country, but the entire West African sub-region.
The envoy, who is also Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, said his country had developed strategy to deal with religious extremism, and had largely been successful in fighting terrorism.

Nigeria`s Consul-General in South Africa, Amb. Uche Ajulu-Okeke, on Thursday urged Nigerians travelling to South Africa to be wary of taxis they board on arrival in that country.
Okeke said in Johannesburg, South Africa, that the Consulate had received reports from 17 Nigerians robbed on arrival at the Oliver Thambo International Airport since the beginning of the year.
“These robbery attacks have put the mission in a lot of problems.
“The president`s aide on NEPAD arrived in South Africa, boarded a taxi recommended by the NEPAD Secretariat and was robbed at gun point a few meters away from the airport, ” she said.
She also cited the robbing of a top Nigerian cosmetologist who recently arrived in South Africa to show case the use of traditional Nigerian cosmetics and improved local value of Shea Butter.
“She was robbed at gun point with her husband after a car crossed their path in front of their hotel and took away all they had,” she said.
The ambassador stated that another Nigerian couple robbed few metres from the airport became traumatised when they got to the mission.
“When they came to the mission, they could not talk, the wife was traumatised.
“We had to buy them new clothes, opened their e-mail and informed the company they came to see that they lost everything,” she said.
Ajulu-Okeke said the robbers often carted away everything from their victims and dump the passengers on the way.
He urged Nigerians coming to South Africa to make arrangements for people to receive them.
“Do not enter the local airport taxis because some of them are into unholy alliance with hoodlums to rob people who come to South Africa for legitimate business,” she said.
The ambassador said the mission was worried that there could be other cases not reported, saying many had been reported to the police for action.
“We are working hard here to promote business relations between our two countries and there are more than 30,000 South Africans living in Nigeria and nothing like this happens to them,” she said.
Ajulu-Okeke urged security agencies in South Africa to check the activities of the hoodlums.
