22 July 2016 – In a cross-border humanitarian operation, a total of 31 metric tonnes of food and some non-food items have been distributed to about 15,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) in Banki, located in Nigeria's restive Borno state, near the border with Cameroon, the United Nations relief wing announced today.
The cross-border operation, undertaken with close coordination between the humanitarian country teams in Nigeria and Cameroon, was necessary as there was no access from Maiduguri, the humanitarian hub in Nigeria, Jens Laerke, spokesperson for the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHAtold journalists at the regular bi-weekly press briefing in Geneva.
“The roads from Maiduguri to Banki were unsafe,” noted Mr. Laerke. “[Ensuring] regular and frequent support to those IDPs […] would only be possible with increased security in the area,” he added.
The food delivered yesterday is expected to last less than a week.
Given the lack of civilian authorities in the area and problems with access, it is difficult to ascertain the actual number of people affected. According to best estimates, the IDPs number between 15,000 and 20,000, he said.
Mr. Laerke said that the Nigerian army, in control of Banki as there are no civil authorities left, had earlier shared some of its own rations with the IDPs, but these were far from sufficient.
The aid convoy complemented another intervention in the field nutrition and health by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF).

More power and improved drivability for an extremely rare supercar

When it comes to high quality modifications for supercars, edo competition Motorsport GmbH is one of the most established names in the business. Regardless of make and model, the edo team is always looking for ways to refine and optimize. That’s also why the owner of a Koenigsegg came to us. Not entirely happy with the power of his Swedish exotic and looking to improve the drivability as well as the appearance, he tasked edo competition with the job of making it happen.

Since the V8 engine is being force-fed by twin superchargers, the main focus was on the setup of the two Rotrex units. With assistance from the manufacturer the drive ratio was modified and the ECU was remapped to accommodate the hardware changes. The aim was to increase the power output while maintaining a broad torque curve over the whole rev range. With the new drive ratio the engine hits its torque peak earlier and puts out up to 891 horsepower, depending on the level of tune. In order to ensure long term reliability of the superchargers, the engine redline was lowered to 7,200 rpm.

The transmission with its notchy gear changes received an overhaul as well. The six speed gearbox was disassembled in its entirety and the plastic bushings were replaced with Uniball units. The final result: full boost pressure from just 3,700 rpm all the way up to 6,000 rpm, reassuringly durable brakes, finely tuned directional stability beyond 300 km/h (186 mph) and a top speed that was reduced slightly from 390 km/h (242 mph) for phenomenal and significantly improved acceleration and drivability.

Additional changes were made to the design of the vehicle’s interior and exterior. The wheels for example underwent a beauty treatment and received a coat of charcoal paint. The updated front with auxiliary lights now resembles the later CCR models, and the Alcantara material that was used throughout the Koenigsegg’s cabin provides a more luxurious feel. The redesigned center console now accommodates a new infotainment system including a reversing camera as well as a custom-made pouch for the immobilizer remote. For safety reasons a TPM system now informs the driver about tire pressures and temperatures. The display was integrated into the dashboard.

The bottom line: edo competition has succeeded in upgrading this extremely rare exotic with fine details without watering down its distinctly unique character. However, the most impressive aspect is still the intense and violent acceleration, which is virtually unparalleled, even in the realm of supercars.

All modifications are carried out exclusively at edo competition Motorsport GmbH in Ahlen.

And: The demo vehicle is for sale! For 89,000 euros the “Golden Snake” will change its owner.

Effective Against Cancer

Soursop is widely promoted as an alternative cancer treatment. However, there is no medical evidence yet. Proponents claim that the effects of soursop leaves in fighting cancer cells are thousands of times better than chemotherapy. What’s even better, they’re much cheaper than the popular treatment for cancer, and it does not come with any side effects and complications. It is said that soursop leaves are highly effective against lung, breast, and prostate cancer.
In order to make a tea out of soursop leaves, chop up 10 soursop leaves and boil them in 3 cups of water. Turn off the stove when about 2/3 of the water evaporates and only 1/3 remains. Allow the tea to cool down and consume it.
.

Urinary Tract Infection Treatment

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a condition that is characterized by the bacterial infection of the urethra, urinary bladder, ureters, and kidneys. Consuming tea made of soursop is believed to have powerful effects against urinary tract infections. If you are prone to this condition, you may take the said tea on a regular basis as a preventive measure.

Soursop Tea Great for Gout Treatment

Gout is a condition characterized by inflamed and painful joints, in particular, the joints in the feet and hands. Consumption of tea made from boiling soursop leaves can help relieve this condition. This natural remedy for gout works like a miracle because it helps in flushing out uric acid from the blood, the main reason behind this painful condition.

Perfect for Eczema

Soursop leaves can also be used to treat eczema. The best thing about using these leaves is that they don’t come with any unfavorable side effects like most topical steroids do, especially when they are used for extended periods of time. To fight eczema, simply follow the procedure above on making a poultice out of soursop leaves. Apply the poultice liberally on areas of the body affected by eczema to benefit from its anti-inflammatory properties.

Boost the Immune System

Do you often find yourself having a cold, cough, flu, and a variety of other diseases and infections? Maybe the reason is a weak immune system. An excellent way to protect your body more effectively against invading microbes is by regularly consuming tea derived from soursop leaves. This beverage may also be taken if you are already suffering from an illness in order to help your body bounce back from it at a much faster rate.

As Nigeria embraces a challenging economic diversification process, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Fund (SDG-F) is working in Kaduna to pilot an innovative approach aimed at revamping the food sector to create new jobs for young people.
The project, officials said, will also increase farmers’ revenues, improve productivity, enhance nutrition and reduce food loss through more sustainable production practices.
The project was formally launched Thursday (today) at the Kaduna State House by the Deputy Governor of the State, Bala Bantex, who represented the governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
UN Goodwill Ambassadors, brothers Joan, Josep and Jordi Roca of restaurant, El Celler can Roca, ranked among the best chefs of the world, UN Agencies, the Sahara Group and Nigerian government authorities are partnering on the Food Africa project.
Launched in Jere, Kaduna, the initiative is set to revolutionize the food industry in Kaduna and beyond, officials said.
For the project kick-off, Josep Roca met with young women and men that will be the driving force of this programme.
A Center of Excellence, specializing on agriculture and agro-processing training, will contribute to expand it to other regions in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa through regional exchange of best practices.
Unique collaboration
UN Goodwill Ambassadors Master Chefs Roca Brothers will contribute their valuable knowledge in sustainable conservation, food preparation and distribution techniques.
The Rocas will provide skills training for young women and men as well as providing technical oversight and sharing best practices.
The renowned chefs will play a key role in showcasing how local food production can be cultivated for new markets and consumers.
“It is an honor for us to be part of this vibrant, promising and collective project and contribute with our cooking, our imagination and our passion to advance the sustainable development goals,” Josep Roca said during the launch of the project.
He added “we are doing this on behalf of all chefs, not only ourselves.”
Several specialized UN Agencies will provide expertise on food production (FAO), labour and employment (ILO) and international trade (ITC). An early warning Geographical Information System (GIS) will also be available to connect farmers with agricultural extension services and provide real time market data.img_20160714_214840-resized-800
Sahara Group, a leading African energy conglomerate and member of the SDG Fund Private Sector Advisory Group and major co-financer of the project, will bring its business perspective to the programme to ensure the viability of the facility’s operations.
“We are excited to showcase this new project which will go a long way to shine the spotlight on the links between agricultural training, food security and improving nutritional livelihoods in our communities” said Tonye Cole, Executive Director and co-founder of the Sahara Group.
The Kaduna State Government will provide the land for the constructed facility as well as farmland and personnel. The state government will collaborate with other state-level stakeholders to improve local infrastructure including rural roads to allow greater access to the facility and farmland.
“The commitment of the state government to this project is unwavering. We are expecting nothing but the best from this collaborative effort which resonates with the aspirations of the government with regards to empowering our people and ultimately achieving the SDGs in Kaduna State,” said the Deputy Governor Bantex.
It is expected that 5,000 women and men of Kaduna will be directly impacted with new job prospects, increased income and additional skills to compete in the thriving food industry.
In addition, an estimated 500,000 residents will indirectly benefit from the Food Africa Project which is designed to be scaled-up in the region and eventually replicated in other parts of Sub-Saharan Africa.
Food for SDGs
Nigeria has been an avid proponent and early adopter of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were approved at the United Nations in September.
Under the leadership of Victoria Orelope-Adefulire, Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, plans and policies are now underway to achieve these goals by 2030.
In Africa, agriculture remains a vital source of employment and income generation. In Nigeria the sector contributes to an estimated 70% of employment in Nigeria, but only 22% of GDP, thus indicating a significant potential for productivity gains.
Despite a strong reliance on farming and agriculture, malnutrition is often prevalent in many regions and invariably an estimated 50-70% of harvests can be lost due to the lack of appropriate storage facilities and limited market information.
On top of that, climate change, could result in falls in output of up to 30%, according to the World Bank estimates. The recent state of emergency declared in Kaduna over tomato shortages and soaring prices caused by the moth tuta absoluta exemplifies climate and environmental pressures to agricultural production to come.
Revolutionizing the food industry
In order to tackle these pressing challenges, the SDG Fund, a mechanism established by the UN to advance the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is engaging governments, UN Agencies, civil society and the private sector on issues critical to enhancing food security and nutrition.
The pilot Food Africa project in Kaduna will provide a backward and forward integration approach for food supply chain management.
The programme will introduce more sustainable practices in the value chain, reduce crop waste and improve smallholder farmers’ profitability.
Recognizing the link between the gaps in skills and structural unemployment in the region, the project will promote income generating opportunities and technical support to promote trade of local goods and services.
The programme will feature an agro processing facility and serve as a Centre of Excellence to increase farmers’ receipts and reduce food loss.
The centre will provide training in the food industry on issues linked to food safety, business planning and product diversification.
Designed as a hybrid public-private facility, the programme will eventually be sustained and managed by local farmers.

Nigeria starting all over again – Buhari

Despite its over 100 years’ existence as a nation, President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday said the situation in the country is like Nigeria was starting all over again.
He said there was a time in the history of the country that there was so much money that successive governments took things for granted.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving Ambassador Nasser Bourita, a Special Envoy of King Mohammed VI of Morocco, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said his administration was only “managing” because of the sharp drop in price of oil.
Buhari said that was why the Federal Government was in a hurry to see projects take off in the agricultural sector to enhance food security and create jobs for teeming unemployed youths.

For us in Nigeria, it is like starting all over again. There was a time we had so much money and took things for granted. But with the fall in the international price of oil, we are now managing,” the President said.
Buhari welcomed the plan by Morocco to establish a fertilizer plant in Nigeria, which would not only serve the country, but the entire West African sub-region.
The envoy, who is also Minister Delegate for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, said his country had developed strategy to deal with religious extremism, and had largely been successful in fighting terrorism.

Robbery: Envoy counsels Nigerians travelling to South Africa

Nigeria`s Consul-General in South Africa, Amb. Uche Ajulu-Okeke, on Thursday urged Nigerians travelling to South Africa to be wary of taxis they board on arrival in that country.
Okeke said in Johannesburg, South Africa, that the Consulate had received reports from 17 Nigerians robbed on arrival at the Oliver Thambo International Airport since the beginning of the year.
“These robbery attacks have put the mission in a lot of problems.
“The president`s aide on NEPAD arrived in South Africa, boarded a taxi recommended by the NEPAD Secretariat and was robbed at gun point a few meters away from the airport, ” she said.
She also cited the robbing of a top Nigerian cosmetologist who recently arrived in South Africa to show case the use of traditional Nigerian cosmetics and improved local value of Shea Butter.
“She was robbed at gun point with her husband after a car crossed their path in front of their hotel and took away all they had,” she said.
The ambassador stated that another Nigerian couple robbed few metres from the airport became traumatised when they got to the mission.
“When they came to the mission, they could not talk, the wife was traumatised.
“We had to buy them new clothes, opened their e-mail and informed the company they came to see that they lost everything,” she said.
Ajulu-Okeke said the robbers often carted away everything from their victims and dump the passengers on the way.
He urged Nigerians coming to South Africa to make arrangements for people to receive them.
“Do not enter the local airport taxis because some of them are into unholy alliance with hoodlums to rob people who come to South Africa for legitimate business,” she said.
The ambassador said the mission was worried that there could be other cases not reported, saying many had been reported to the police for action.
“We are working hard here to promote business relations between our two countries and there are more than 30,000 South Africans living in Nigeria and nothing like this happens to them,” she said.
Ajulu-Okeke urged security agencies in South Africa to check the activities of the hoodlums.
